Itinerary

A truly unique private tour to discover some of the most beautiful hidden gems of Rome. This journey in time will show you the evolution of this form of art with magnificent mosaics from ancient Rome to the Medieval time.

This full day private tour starts at Santa Costanza Mausoleum: among the most particular and beautiful mosaics in Rome dating back to the 4th century AD are used in this Christian mausoleum, burial of Emperor Costantine's daughter Costanza.

Then we will continue with the San Zenone Chapel in Santa Prassede Church, with its precious golden mosaics.

The next stop is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore: one of the main basilicas of Rome famous for the mosaics on the facade and on the apse arch inside with the Coronation of the Virgin by the Franciscan mosaicist Jacopo Turriti ( XII cent.)

After lunch we will visit the Palazzo Massimo Museum : on the last floor of the National Archeological Museum a whole gallery is dedicated to magnificent ancient mosaics (the museum is very big so the visit will focused on the last floor only).

The tour will continue with San Clemente church: beside the beautiful apse mosaic with the Thriumph of the Cross it is also interesting to go downstairs to explore the underground levels containing the remains of a Roman house and a Mythra temple.

If times allows, we will also visit Santa Maria in Trastevere church, where the mosaics are on the facade, on the apse arch plus on the two panels with stories of the Virgin by Pietro Cavallini.

Note: this can be a walking tour and you can use a couple of cabs to cover the major distances (Santa Costanza and Trastevere) or if you prefer we can arrange a private car (this will carry an extra cost).

Duration: 7 hours (including lunch break)
