Appian Way

Itinerary

Via Appia Antica, the Appian Way, is one of Rome's oldest roads. This private walk will take you out of the city, and you will discover the the history of ancient Rome surrounded by a beautiful countryside. The Appian Way, the first paved "high way" leading out of Rome, was built in 312 BC and is today an archaeological park.

Itinerary:

  • Your tour will begin at the Baths of Caracalla, where your private guide will take you through the magnificent ruins of these thermae, among the biggest ever built during the Roman Empire

  • We will then start going along the Appian way and reach the Catacombs of San Sebastiano where you will go underground to discover the burial places of the ancient Christians (depending on the day of closure the visit will be done in the catacombs of San Callisto that are equally interesting)

  • The visit will continue with the Circus of Maxentius, built by the emperor for chariot races in honor of his son and second in size only to the Circus Maximus

  • We will then reach the monumental Tomb of Caecilia Metella, daughter in law of Marcus Licinius Crassus, one of the triumvir. This monument is considered the most famous landmark of the Appian way
